How to Let Go of Toxic Relationships and Emotional Pain – Islamic Wisdom from Quran (Baqarah 216) & Hadith

If acquaintance becomes a disease, it’s better to forget it.

If a relationship turns into a burden, it’s better to break it.

That story which cannot reach its end,

give it a beautiful turn and leave it there— that’s better.

Sahir Ludhianvi’s words pierce straight through the heart, don’t they? The word “leaving” or “letting go” sounds so small, so simple when spoken or explained… but to truly understand it, to actually live it—that’s where the real struggle begins. The moment this word appears, an emotional storm rises inside. Just hearing “let go” sends a shiver of fear through the soul.

Letting go can feel impossibly hard—sometimes it’s a person, sometimes memories of a past that refuses to fade, sometimes endless debates of right and wrong, sometimes toxic habits, sometimes fragrant dreams that once felt so alive, sometimes our own comfort sacrificed in the chase for something more, sometimes sweet sleep stolen by restless thoughts, sometimes unanswered questions that throb like a wound, sometimes half-finished dreams that still beat in the chest, and sometimes the deep, hidden pain buried inside the heart.

To let go truly means surrendering in contentment to Allah’s will. It means accepting with the heart that whatever Allah has written in my destiny is ultimately for my good—because whatever He does for His servants is always better, always wiser, always kinder than what our limited minds can imagine. Our tiny intellect cannot see what is truly right or wrong for us; Allah alone knows best. As He says in the Quran:

“But perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216)

So obviously, there is mercy in letting go—whatever is being taken away was never meant to stay, because it would have ruined you, hurt you more deeply. Even if today something precious is slipping from your hands, believe this: Allah is preparing something far better. He will surely replace it with what is truly good for you, in His perfect timing.

Letting go simply means whispering to yourself, “It’s okay… let it go. Whatever happens, happens for the best.” If a person keeps clinging, chasing, refusing to release—life begins to fill with silent illnesses. The heart grows heavy, unable to bear the weight anymore. Heart attacks creep in, diabetes takes root, strokes arrive—not from sugar alone, but from endless stress, from the poison of constant tension. So much sickness isn’t born from food… it’s born from not letting go.

Learn to surrender sometimes. Don’t fight every loss. Instead, look back and ask: What did I learn from what slipped away? We shouldn’t live in the past, but we should carry its lessons forward like quiet treasures.

When nothing comes your way, when doors stay shut, quietly congratulate yourself from within: “Alhamdulillah, Allah saved me.” Because something far more beautiful is waiting just ahead—and one day, you will see it arrive, brighter than what you once cried for.

letting go in islam motivational quote with sahir ludhianvi wisdom

The nights before true letting go are sleepless. You toss and turn, restlessness fills every corner of the heart. And that’s okay—there should be some ache, some unease in this process. If there were no pain in letting go, where would the depth of life be?

Just think of a tree: when new leaves are about to bloom, it gently sheds the old ones to make space. When something new is coming into your life, the old begins to fall away on its own—so that room can be made. When that space is being created, don’t panic. Welcome it with open arms.

Letting go, in the end, means accepting what Allah has decreed with trust and certainty—that His decisions are always, always for our highest good.

And remember the beautiful words from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:

“If Allah intends to give you something, the whole world together cannot take it away from you. And if Allah intends to withhold something from you, the whole world together cannot give it to you.”

So breathe… release the grip… and trust.

The most beautiful chapters often begin right after we learn how to let go.
